“Cannon Hersey has been at it for nearly 20 years now, traveling the world over which has become his canvas, and whatever he could get his hands on, in the creation of his art. His art is filled with a love and an innocence in what he makes. Make no mistake about it, this is the best kind of art: true to the fulfillment in what we see and in what he makes along the way.” – Gerard Malanga, 2013

Loni Efron and Cannon Hersey invite you for a private reception for Cannon Hersey: Mid Career Retrospective. Cannon Hersey, is a photographer and fine artist. He organizes large-scale cultural experiences in non-traditional spaces around the world. His work begins with the photograph and then explores the image in other mediums including silkscreen, photo-etching, mixed media, light-box, projections and installations. Hersey engages the viewer in the spirit and soul of the places he has traveled while exploring their unique cultures. The exhibition space for this retrospective is as non-traditional as some of Hersey’s works. The curator and artist are delving into new territory together as creative pioneers, archivists and internationalists. The works are exhibited throughout four floors of the Efron Family’s classic turn-of-the-century brownstone.

Loni Efron is a dealer, archivist and curator based in Harlem, New York. Her journey began with artist Annie Leibovitz as her black and white printer, archivist andcurator. As Loni’s career flourished she met photographer David LaChapelle and helped monetize his archive in addition to working on his books and exhibitions. Loni has worked closely and extensively with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, creating a complete, on-line photographic archive of his career. Touring the world with Mark Seliger’s art, she was exposing the world to the artist. She has worked with Keith Richards for over a decade as his photo editor culminating with Life, his autobiography.

As co-founder of Peach Editions, a dynamic, online collection she is bringing art directly into the digital marketplace and your living room with some exclusive pieces and some of the more familiar classics.Following years of connecting the artist to the gallery and other outlets, Loni Efron now brings the art directly to the public.

Teaming up with Cannon Hersey, she is now committed to expanding his reach. This exhibition includes select works spanning Cannon Hersey’s over 20-year career across a number of different collections.

In 1996, Cannon hitchhiked throughout southern Africa and captured the vibrancy of the societies and cultures through his photographs. Hersey has since returned 15 times to Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Silk Route images were shot between 1996-2000 during Hersey’s excursions throughout China, India, Mongolia, Tibet and Nepal. The photographs are mounted on contemporary and antique textiles and artifacts from the regions to signify the past colliding with the future.

The Kokasi, a slang term meaning ‘’in the community”, series was inspired by the courage of South Africans in their perseverance to combat identity issues, economic hardship, and racial inequality.

Also on view is The Electric Organic series, which evolved through Cannon’s exploration of urban light as a way to express his views in a more abstract format. The exhibit will also feature collaborations with Samson Mnisi, John Hersey, Patricia Thrane, Kimberley Goff and Gregg Emery.

Hersey’s work will also be on view at a two-man exhibition “No Food and Drink Allowed” at 2AC Gallery, Brooklyn, NY from October 10th – Nov 6th and at a solo show, “Luminous” at Wendy McDaris Fine Art in Hudson, NY from Oct 11 – Nov 6th.

Peach Editions will feature exclusive editions of works by Cannon Hersey. These works can be found at peacheditions.com.

Cannon Hersey will have an hour length television documentary series made about his involvement in the Pikadon Project while traveling and making art in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukashima for NHK, Japan’s PBS or BBC. The Pikadon Project which will culminate with a collaborative art experience with media, music and fine art in Time Square on August 6th-9th, 2015. Pikadon 2015 will mark the 70th anniversary of the WWII bombing and strives to create a non-nuclear world.

Hersey’s work has been exhibited at Lincoln Center’s Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery in 2002 and 2012; the opening event of the 2008 Sao Paulo Bienale; at the private collection of Kim Esteve; the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporic Arts (MoCADA; the New York Open Center, the Johannesburg Art Foundation, and the presidential award ceremony for Nelson Mandela at NYU.
