Trestle Projects is pleased to announce our upcoming solo exhibition by recent Visiting Artist Resident, Allison Kaufman. Conjuring contradicting emotions, her work often explores the performance of gender. Limited Time Offer features three videos that reveal emotions associated with masculine expressions of fantasy perpetuated by consumerism in the automobile industry. This show implies the temporary joy and hope experienced by both the consumer and the salesman.
Two of Kaufman’s videos, Motorin’ and Motorin’ Outtakes are lighthearted examples of consumers’ fantasy with motorcycle culture. Despite the motorcycle industry’s predominantly masculine marketing approach, it doesn’t deter a variety of ages and genders from posturing proudly on the bike.
3rd Ave Car Dealerships suggests the salesman’s fantasy of being successful through formulaic marketing techniques. The artist references these loud attempts to draw buyers’ attention by combining imagery of fluttering pennants with audio from car salesman videos found on YouTube. The once earnest and hopeful decorations become part of the landscape. Worn and tattered, they echo a salesman’s weathered optimism.
