MANDELA – 6 DECADES by Jurgen Schadeberg

Jürgen Schadeberg was born in 1931 in Berlin and as a teenager he worked as an intern for a German Press Agency in Hamburg. In 1950 he emigrated to South Africa and became chief photographer, picture editor and lead artist at the magazine “Drum”. During this time he photographed important events in the lives of South Africans in the 50s. These images show the life and struggle of South Africans during Apartheid and include important personalities from the history of South Africa Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu, etc. Jürgen Schadeberg, which is also called the “Father of South African Photography”, is a important figure of photography in South Africa and around the world. Most of his work, which includes 70 years a collection of 200,000 negatives, includes a wealth of timeless, iconic images. 2008 Africa presented Festival with great success his exhibition “Black and white fifties in South Africa”. The exhibition took place from May 5 to 30 June in the foyer of the University of Würzburg, Sander 2, 97070 Würzburg, instead.
